Torrington Pupils put design skills to work

Pupils from Great Torrington Junior School have been helping to spread the word about anti social behaviour.

A group of pupils from the school youth council were asked by Safer North Devon to tackle a project to help design and produce a leaflet about anti social behaviour (ASB). The pupils brief was that the leaflet should appeal to 7 – 11 year olds after it was found that there is current no information that is ‘young person friendly’.

The leaflet contains a basic understanding of what ASB is, how it can affect others and tips to avoid ASB. Pupils who helped with the leaflet were presented with certificates recognising the time and effort they put in during school, at lunch times and at home after school.

Kate Morne, Safer North Devon, says: “These young people came up with some brilliant ideas, they worked very hard and spent their break times working on the project.  Their ideas were really creative and considered a number of factors which would only be identified by asking the young people who would read this type of leaflet. We hope that this leaflet will be given out to all children to give them a better understanding of what anti social behaviour is and how to tackle the problem.”

Safer North Devon felt the most effective way of designing a leaflet for young people on ASB would be to talk directly to them and find out what they would like to know. The leaflet has now been distributed to all pupils in junior schools across North Devon.
