Is the Police authority hearing your voice

A recent consultation exercise has found 65% of people asked agreed that the police in their area were dealing with anti-social behaviour.

In the summer of 2009 Devon and Cornwall Police Authority went out and about in the community asking how much people agreed that they were confident the police in their area were dealing with anti-social behaviour.  Of the 699 respondents almost two thirds agreed with the statement, “I am confident the police in my area are dealing with anti-social behaviour”.

The respondents were from across Devon, Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly and represented a range of communities and ages.  At many of the events the Police Authority attended, asking the question, members of the public were keen to express their views to the organisation that is responsible for scrutinising police performance.

Councillor Mike Hicks (The Council of the Isles of Scilly), Chair of the Community Engagement Committee said:
“Police authorities, made up of local councillors and local independent members, provide the best way of ensuring that policing is responsive to unique local needs.  Devon and Cornwall Police Authority wants to be sure it can hear all voices in the community and tries to engage in a number of ways.

“In 2010 we will be attending a number of events including local shows, Pride events and Respect festivals; and holding Police Authority Liaison Meetings in your area.  The Authority has recently set up a Facebook page, become a friend at www.facebook.com/devonandcornwallpoliceauthority to keep informed of our work.  Or send a blank email to polauth@devonandcornwall.pnn.police.uk to start receiving our bi monthly newsletter which updates readers on recent activities and planned events”.
