Thematic Work Area: Youth Crime Prevention
A group of partner agencies, responsible for Youth Crime Prevention, concluded that there was insufficient information available to them to identify areas of need and target resources to provide additional holiday provision. In order to identify areas of need it proved necessary to map youth crime hotspots against existing levels of provision.
Youth crime, youth anti-social behaviour and positive activities for 8-18 year olds across North Devon and Torridge have been mapped, and youth crime hotspots have been identified. Detailed consultation with people and individuals working with young people has been carried out, to gather qualitative information regarding the needs of the communities. In the youth crime hotspots, the amount and type of provision has been considered to identify whether there is a need for more provision or different provision. This information has been used to write a report, which includes a series of strategic and localised recommendations.
The results and recommendations are being use to advise and inform providers of provision. The immediate outcomes of the report are the implementation of three recommendations. This has led to increased provision and facilitated access to provision for young people in parts of Bideford and Ilfracombe, and consultation being run with young people in West Bideford.
