Great Torrington Junior School Anti Social Behaviour Project

Thematic Work Area: ASB

What was the need?

It was identified that there are currently no young person friendly leaflets available in North Devon providing information on Anti Social Behaviour to 7 – 11year olds. Safer Devon Partnership provided a leaflet in 2007 on the Anti Social Behaviour Escalation process but this was more suitable for adults.

We felt that this was a major gap in information being provided to young people about who deals with ASB, being a victim of ASB and committing ASB.

Safer North Devon felt important that if a new leaflet was produced it needed to cover the following information:

A basic understanding of what ASB is?
How it might affect others or be perceived by them
Tips to avoid ASB situations
Contact details to find out more.

It needed to be bright and easy to understand providing them with appropriate and accurate information.

What have we done?

Safer North Devon felt the most effective way of designing a leaflet for young people on ASB would be to consult with young people and find out what they would like to know. I felt the most effective way would be pass this over to some young people to design a leaflet they would read.

In order to do this I met with staff at Great Torrington School to discuss the project and to determine if they had a small group of young people who would be interested in tackling this project. Fortunately the school have their own student council who often work on small projects on behalf of the school. Pupils in the youth council were varying ages from 7 – 11. The students were all given a brief of what the leaflet should contain, how it will be used and design considerations.

They were also asked to include:
Examples of images they might like to use and why
Examples of images they don’t like and why
Recommendations typefaces and font size
Recommended colour palates and format.

What are the results of our work?

A leaflet has now been produced by these Young people, please see attached document.
The leaflet will be used in the following ways:

Available in public places
Sent to all secondary schools and colleges for general use
Used as part of the PSHE delivery by Police Youth Intervention Officers, beat Managers and PCSOs.
Sent to all youth clubs and voluntary organisations that come into contact with all young people.
Used as supporting information for stages of the escalation process support letter1s, letter2s and ABCs.
